Artist Scott Draper BIO

My name is Scott Draper I have been doing art for as long as I can remember. I didn’t start to treat my art as a career up until about two, two and-a-half years ago. I did not look to art as a career until I had met a friend of mine, and mentor, Ian Patric Mcalister. He was a huge influence on my work, as he taught me to think outside of the ‘standard’ box with my art. Ian opened up a studio that I was invited to work with him in, this experience gave me a lot of new techniques and skills to incorporate into my art. I spent about 5 months working beside him and learning skills he has learned or taught himself during the years at O.C.A. in Toronto. I had shown a couple times prior to working with him but I would say I grew most as an artist over the time I spent working with him.

As an artist we have influences that help us grow and inspire us. I have gained a lot of great skills over the years, the first aspect being from a comic book back ground. In my youth I learned to draw the human form initially from drawing comic charters. As I matured, I became more interested in the fine arts and artist like: Gustav Klimt, Leonardo da Vinci, Egon Schiele and many more. I find most of my inspiration from the world around me, my interest and music.

I find painting is vary ritualistic for me, first I need to get music set up, I have many styles I will delve into and each one is meant to evoke the energy and emotion into my art. The next step is to get my area set to be explored, change into my painting clothes and the organized chaos begins.  My musical inspirations are often: Nine Inch Nails, Tool, Pig, Zoe Keating, Amanda Palmer, Neutral Milk Hotel, Bjork, Tori Amos and so many more.

Now that I have brief description of me and my process a bit I’ll leave the rest to my artist statement and show some of my old work.

Artist Statement

Since I started my work, I involved the creation of conceptually based pieces on the human perspective and how they interact in the world around them. In my work, I deconstruct the emotional response in relationship to the habitat around them. My work also addresses gender roles/gender assignment and sexuality, the fragility of human dynamics, the underlying threads of violence and danger that is to be human in the world today. These themes are often combined with metaphors of commonly seen things like, people, landscapes, objects, the things may seem mundane or domestic in the world around us but can speak much more if thought about. The colors I choose are used to establish a surreal quality, suggests notions of loss, hope, fear, longing, question and much more.  I incorporate graphic elements into my pieces, which formally unifies the separation of the objects and the subject in each painting.

My earlier work outlined human solitude and the yearning to be with others and to connect with the world around us. I focused on the disconnection and isolation people today have from one another, in physical, sexual and emotional factors as well as the drive and pull we all have to reconnect with these things.

“Here’s to the crazy ones; The misfits. The rebels. The trouble-makers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules, and they have no respect for the status-quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify, or vilify them. But the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”

Hi – really great web site you have established. I enjoyed reading this posting. I did want to write a remark to tell you that the design of this site is very aesthetically sweet. I used to be a graphic designer, now I am a copy editor for a marketing firm. I have always enjoyed working with computing machines and am trying to learn code in my free time (which there is never enough of lol).
