Natural Touches to City Style: HollowPoint Photoshoot

Bringing the wilderness and creativity together with modern metal rock music provokes a collaboration both surprising and new! Before Supernova’s Band On The Run 2009 show, headliner’s HollowPoint accompanied my friend Mark McCreary and I to an old, abandoned house where we based the photo shoot on. Here, in this undisclosed location, the boys of HollowPoint were decked out in Mark’s ponchos and sweaters, as well as his Uniquely Done crafts and accessories. The head wear seen on the HollowPoint crew was all crafted by hand, made from pine cone pieces, eucalyptus leaves and other natural materials, combined with wire and leather strap. The guitar case displayed in a few select photos was also entirely done with a steady hand and heavy patience by Mark. Bring together some die-hard old school metal fans, a guy with never-ending determination and a vision of what metal music today should be, you got the underground metal band Jugular! Sound like something you could jive to? I am sure, with their ultra-combination of vintage metal riffs and vibes from back in time, anywhere from the 1970’s up to the 1990’s. Variety? Yes, please! And thank you!

Jugular, Live In Action

As they were once known as Ominous, this three years and running band has gone through its fair share of ups and downs, including name changes, member’s lost, frivolous lawsuits, you name it! The driving force behind the band, now known as Jugular, is Jordan Grimbly, the man who kept this band going strong through the hard times. All thanks to his undying passion of music and hopeful change in the underground scene, especially in regards to the metal-rock genre. The members who accompany Jordan are: Ben Fuchs on bass guitar, Bren Pierce as drummer, and James Stewart on lead guitar. Jordan, he plays guitar and is Jugular’s lead singer, while the rest of the band also assist with the vocals. The skill behind this musical compilation is to adjust the sound for songs throughout the different tones and talents they can all contribute. Result is a great sound!

Jordan Grimbly, Jamming

Jugular has a unique creative process when creating their music, as most musical groups do. Every person is so different, with different influences and experiences, so the combination is always spontaneous with various perspectives. When writing lyrics for their songs, Jugular finds inspiration in the way of old metal rock, the vibe, the sound. The lyrics themselves are developed when the time is right, the thought is there, words are written. Jordan Grimbly often writes the lyrics initially, being the lead singer, and as the sound develops the contribution to lyrical content takes its toll from the others. This group keeps it real, and has no fear telling the public what past artist’s influenced their music today. Having established their own style, outside influences are simply influences to their own unique sound. What do their lyrics tell? What they know: Heavy metal!

A heavy metal band in our town is nothing out of the ordinary; in fact many of the bands here have a heavy metal influence. Jugular considers themselves different from most of these bands. In a sense, they go against the grain of heavy metal today. Jordan Grimbly is a strong individual with a dedicated vision to the metal music scene, along with the band members that make it happen. They choose not to compete with the heavy metal sound, meaning they choose not to jam harder and harder then the next, until the music is unidentifiable. Not their style, as they feel many other metal groups follow this trend.

Classic metal is always the basis for their music, but 90’s grunge and fast thrash punk take a close seat. Specifically, bands like The Offspring, Neil Diamond, The Cranberries, The Misfits, GBH…quite the combination! All the old favorites withhold a treasure for those musically inclined to learn from. And that they do.

Over the three years Jugular has been jamming, they have played quite a few shows and have made a great start to band recognition. They have played: The Foundation here in Barrie, Barrie’s Event Center for Battle Of The Bands, The Reverb in Toronto and The Harb in Owen Sound. Not only that, but they have recorded at Machinehead Studios as well as Underground studios, which lead them to release Metal For The Damned EP and LP and Unleash The Beast Demo. Great accomplishment over 3 years filled with mishaps!

Let The City Sights Find You

All accomplishments aside, Jordan and the band have a true passion for playing great music that the people love. Money is not their focus, and never has been. The thrill of playing shows and absorbing the crowd is pay enough. One of the goals Jordan wishes to meet is to have more shows that allow the under age crowd. The fans of that age group are very dedicated fans, along with the rest, and should have the opportunity to listen to the live music. True that! You will hear great things from Jordan and the rest of Jugular, as they are also set on the progression of the arts scene here in our cultured city of Barrie. It’s here!

Music From Different Quarters Combined = HollowPoint

A powerful, electric sound. A blend of punk, metal, alternative rock, with the overall hardcore appeal; This is what makes the small-town band Hollow Point.

Derived from the small town of Penetanguishene, Ontario, the five members of Hollow Point come from different areas in the world of Music. Three members from the band were initially involved in different local bands in their hometown, with very different music styles. For many creative, musically inclined minds it can be hard to alter your style, but for this band, that was the initial connection.

A phrase to describe their musical style and overall rhythmic relationship?

“We are chemical”.

Stemming from so many different backgrounds, as the members did, many would find this to be an ongoing conflict. Not so much. Their styles may collide, but they also coincide, which works in the most ironic but genius of ways. The members of HollowPoint found a happy medium amongst themselves, and their music, that allows them to combine their styles and sounds to make something truly unique. That is what creativity in the music industry is all about! Quite a skill to master, I am sure. Amazing music and style aside, the members of HollowPoint clearly have a lasting bond and strong connection.

They have recently played a show here in Barrie, and have another upcoming show on Saturday, March 7th at The Legion, 410 St. Vincent Street. This show will be a great one, not only featuring HollowPoint, but some other underground talents that range in music styles.
