Natural Touches to City Style: HollowPoint Photoshoot

Bringing the wilderness and creativity together with modern metal rock music provokes a collaboration both surprising and new! Before Supernova’s Band On The Run 2009 show, headliner’s HollowPoint accompanied my friend Mark McCreary and I to an old, abandoned house where we based the photo shoot on. Here, in this undisclosed location, the boys of HollowPoint were decked out in Mark’s ponchos and sweaters, as well as his Uniquely Done crafts and accessories. The head wear seen on the HollowPoint crew was all crafted by hand, made from pine cone pieces, eucalyptus leaves and other natural materials, combined with wire and leather strap. The guitar case displayed in a few select photos was also entirely done with a steady hand and heavy patience by Mark. Our area, and our world for that matter, is full of picture perfect moments not often caught by the everyday eye. One with a vision to see beyond the surface is key to open the eyes of the world, to the world.

Beauty is a highly-valued quality in our lives today, whether it be the model on the runway, the array of colors on the canvas, the ridges of an oak tree, or the photo that catches these precious but typical moments in time. We, as a judgemental and harsh society, naturally, will look first at the tall and graceful girl walking down the street, or the bouquet of blooming roses in the store window. Beauty, in true form, is much more than that. Can one find beauty in dead flowers, struggling to stand tall? I believe we can, and when we can, we can let go of many unreasonable and unrealistic standards of beauty.

This is one of the many goals I feel a photographer struggles to accomplish; There message to the world, if the world will ever be willing to listen. One day.

Although it is a fulfilling feeling to provoke such a thought in another, it can often be a difficult task. And why? We as a whole have not taken the chance to lead with an open mind and an open eye to the fact that beauty has no true limits, no true standards. But we have not made it that far, together.

As any professional or amateur photographer knows, it is hard to have your work and appreciated for what it is worth. Blame it on the standard of what is desireable. However, in an art such as this with no limit as to interpretation, there is much to be explored and along comes change. We, and only we, will get there someday.

As time goes by I am finding more and more great photographers! Great shots of nature and general life that make many question why we do not notice these fine details everyday. Fine details that, if captured, are questioned and appreciated, which is what great photography is all about! When I look through Kala’s album, I think about the fact that I see these objects quite regularly, but the human eye never truly catches the underlying beauty and intricacy!
