A trio with numerous sounds, techniques and skills make up a group with many opinions and feelings, represented by a hypocritical name and varied symbolism, The Apathetics. This ska/punk/rock musical pile, with a little twist of every style in between, represents the unspoken societal issues, dismissed opinions and idea of many farfetched sounds creating rhythmic ease.

Jammin' It Out

They base the vision for their music, lyrics and overall image on the contradicting factors in between. Much of their music upbeat, the lyrics reflect a much more darkening outlook on the matter, yet bringing a calm, relaxed feeling to the atmosphere. The artistic and in-depth concept of The Apathetics is not only reviving, but motivating. Not only should you speak up against what you feel you should, but involving your own and supporting the music is action enough towards a better environment around you, and all. This may be a common goal for many musicians, but for The Apathetics, it is the drive, a reality.

The Apathetics, as a name, has been lingering in the music scene on and off for some time, since January ’05. Members have come and gone, but the two who have been for the full ride go by the names of Cody Pelka(Vocals/Bass), and Greg Stafford(Drums/Vocals), now accompanied by Curtis Lamain(Vocals/Guitar) and their band manager, Casey Rand. Although the group has an idea of their stationary positions in regards to instruments, it is not set in stone. Whoever compliments whichever instrument according to the sound they are trying to achieve determines who plays which harmonizing tool. This openness to variety and placement allows the musicians to experiment with the sounds and skills each can contribute, in return creating an ever-changing powerful charge. The lyrics often reflect their combined views of our ignored issues in humanity, complimented by a sweet sound of hope. At times the lyrics will be interpreted as random messages, which leaves those interpreting to take ideas into their own varied palms. Good connections throughout the team keep the music and their message alive and spreading, not to mention assisting our music scene to the next level, whatever that is, wherever.

Greg Stafford(Drums/Vocals)

Greg Stafford, the leading drive for The Apathetics, has kept this idea alive for the past four years, dodging set backsand varied roadblocks. As members and friends had played and past, Greg came to terms with the fact that personalities can blend, bend or flourish. Being very open himself, Greg carries the admirable quality of compromising group and music-related tasks, allowing those involved to adjust comfortably. Now that he has found Cody and Curtis, who also share the accommodating characteristic, their energy and talents combined could be described as ‘smooth sailing’.

Greg is very passionate about their lyrics and what The Apathetics represent: a reality full of hypocrisy and denied issues, exposed. To get more involved in seemingly minor issues throughout communities, as well as develop a better world understanding, Greg is currently attending Georgian College for Social Service Work. This makes the musical message that much more meaningful for him, and those who listen. Through this program, Greg is able to focus on issues like poverty and mental illness, which is often reflected in their songs. This new-found knowledge encourages the group to make a definite statement that will be heard through their artistic expression of music. Bands and styles that inspire Greg’s creativity are broad; Punk rock at heart, he also enjoys Ska, Reggae, Rap, and Metal. From Tiger Army’s heavy acoustic, to Dream Theater’s unifying instrumentals, all the way around the bend to Eminem’s disguised heart-felt lyrics, he enjoys many angles of the musical spectrum.

Curtis Lamain (Guitar/Vocals)

Curtis Lamain, currently residing in Brighton, is the one-man orchestra of ability and sound. Being experienced with a variety of instruments, he has much to offer in terms of musical understanding and originality. To name a few of his interests, he plays the guitar, bass, drums, piano, sings and experiments with sounds of the violin, didgery doo, anything he can get his hands on, really. Just like the others, Curtis is influenced by many different musical genres and talents. Folk, reggae, blues, country, metal, punk…all of these styles are interpreted and infused together to communicate his signature style. Curtis participates in another band as well, A Silent Scream, a hardcore metal band, where he plays guitar as well. Sharing much of the same musical interests as the others, Curtis represents the contrast to punk individually, with his blues/folk contribution. Some artists/bands he finds most inspiring are talents like Oscar Peterson, Tool, Propaghandi, to name a few. Though his taste may be slightly different, the boys share one main goal: Great sounds combined.

The final member of this connection is Cody Pelka, strummin’ on the bass with style. A long-time friend of Greg’s, he is one of the two survivors of the original Apathetics. Previously Greg and Cody were involved in a new music project, The Proper Authorities, but The Apathetics was still alive within them. His main creative focus is music, and loves to find the next inspirational note within the sounds of fast, acoustic guitar and the progressive music genre. Solo guitarists play a huge role in influencing Cody’s musical touch, especially the solo artist sounds of Joe Satrioni. A very charismatic individual, Cody brings excitement and personality to the atmosphere. Aside from adding unnecessary yet crucial energy to the group, Cody is exploring his various paths in his artistic life. Another punk rocker at heart, Cody jams to the likes of NOFX, Tiger Army, any fast acoustic is a number one.

Cody Pelka (Bass/Vocals)

Having much of an interest in helping our music, and general arts, scene progress into bigger and better things is a big focus for The Apathetics. The goal, as shared with many, is to create a musical, artistic community that is strong in opinion and authority, of some sort. The Apathetics look for any and all opportunities to play and be heard, work with other artists and spread the word of now, tomorrow. Give us say, we will give you our talent, our emotion, a contribution of many priceless but inexpensive, intangible gifts. These fine details of harmony and rhythm to the ears, eyes and soul is such a simple way to live each day that much happier, satisfied, complete.
